The specialists at ABS Superbruk, a recognised manufacturer of paving stones, have prepared some practical suggestions for measures that will protect the paving stones and keep them looking beautiful for a long time:
- Cleaning the pavement
The first step should be to remove all debris. The surface should be swept thoroughly, getting rid of debris, leaves or sand. A very good solution is to use a pressure washer. It allows the pavement to be quickly and thoroughly cleaned, not only of stains and dirt, but also of deposits, algae and lichen.
- Weed removal
Seemingly harmless, small plants located in the gaps between the elements can become the cause of significant damage. Weed roots damage the structure of the paving surfaces and facilitate the absorption of water, which increases in volume at sub-zero temperatures, causing the paving blocks to shift or even crumble or crack. Unwanted vegetation can be removed with garden tools or weedkillers.
- Filling in missing joints
After the pavers have been thoroughly cleaned and weeds have been removed, deficiencies may become apparent in the gaps between them. This can compromise the stability and unity of the entire paving surface. All joint defects should be filled with sand or grit.
- Impregnation
The next step is impregnation. This is a treatment that involves coating the paving elements with a specialised impregnant to create a protective layer on their surface. Impregnating agents have many advantages. They reduce moisture absorption, protect against colour fading and limit the growth of moss and lichen.
- Systematic snow clearance
Even though we have prepared our pavement perfectly for winter, we must not forget to clear it of snow regularly. Lingering snow or ice can have a negative impact on its condition. The choice of tools is important. The best solution is to choose snow shovels or ploughs with elements made of reinforced aluminium. They are safe for our pavement. If you plan to use de-icing agents - e.g. magnesium chloride - remember to do so in moderation. We strongly discourage the use of road salt, which has a very negative effect on paving, creating stains and discolouration.
Following the above advice will protect our ankle from winter hazards and allow,
so that it becomes an indispensable part of the garden and home space in spring.
