Choosing paving stones is one of the most important decisions when planning the design of a garden or the space around the house. With the current multitude of products on the market, the right choice is not an easy one. Customers often face a dilemma, not knowing what to look for. We have prepared a short and clear guide to help you make your decision.
In order to make the right choice of paving blocks, it is worth taking the following criteria into account. They will allow us to identify the product that will be the optimum solution for our domestic space and will prevent purchasing mistakes.
- Quality
Paving blocks is a purchase that will last for years. We should look for products whose quality does not raise our concerns. The paving blocks should be manufactured according to the European standard EN 1338 - "Concrete paving blocks. Requirements and test methods". It is worth checking whether the manufacturer whose products we are interested in declares compliance with the standard. This guarantees us that high quality materials such as aggregates or pigments have been used in the production of the products and that they have the appropriate performance parameters.
-
Thickness
The thickness of the paving is absolutely one of the most important selection criteria. It depends on the nature of the use of our space. The more pressures and loads the surface will be subjected to, the thicker the material should be. For garden paths or terraces, paving blocks with a thickness of 4 cm will be sufficient (e.g. Plaza or Siena paving blocks). For surfaces subject to vehicular traffic, such as driveways or house car parks, paving blocks 6 cm thick should be chosen (e.g. Superbruk paving blocks from the Noble Rinsed and Old Town groups). In the case of vehicular traffic and heavy traffic, the material must be at least 8 cm thick (e.g. Vip Plates or Super Mozaik paving blocks). We can, of course, use thicker pavers on terraces or garden paths, but the use of inadequately thin material may end up damaging it during use.
-
Shape
The shape of the paving blocks should be chosen according to the way the space is arranged. On large, uniform surfaces and terraces, products with larger formats look good. For narrow paths, we choose paving blocks with smaller dimensions. If we want to achieve striking circular decorations or build winding paths, small cubes with a trapezoidal shape will be helpful (Pikolo from the Sun, Noble washed cubes and Old Town). In rustic gardens, irregularly shaped pavers inspired by the look of natural stones (Arena Old Town) will look good.
-
Style/design
When choosing pavers, the appearance is of course the deciding factor. Apart from personal taste and aesthetic judgement, it is worth paying attention to ensure that the style and design of the pavers are consistent with the other elements of our house and its surroundings. An attractive and stylish property is one where all the elements are connected. Regardless of the chosen trend - modern, classic or rustic, the interior, the building and the garden should form a stylistically unified whole.
-
Colours
We choose the colour of the pavers by considering two aspects. Firstly, aesthetics. The colour should be attractive and match the other elements of the property, such as the roof, woodwork or the building facade. Secondly, it is worth paying attention to usability. If the pavement in a location is exposed to more dirt, it is worth choosing darker colours and melanges combining different colours and shades on one element.
-
Price
We select paving blocks according to our budget. However, we should remember not to look for the cheapest products. Very low prices translate into poor quality. The value of a purchased paving block is only one component of the whole investment of building a backyard or a garden. Therefore, the purchase of cheap material will not drastically reduce the whole cost estimate, but it will strongly influence the visual effect of our project and its durability.
-
Brand
When choosing a cube, it is worth paying attention to its brand. Although we will not find its logo on the product, it is a guarantee of quality, solidity of workmanship and proper storage of materials. The brand is also followed by additional services such as consultancy, design or extended warranty.
